"Gear Up" - pre-learner driver program
A graded capacity building program for NDIS clients with neurodevelopmental or psychosocial disabilities.
Gear Up Program – What is it?
The Active One Gear up program is a graded capacity building program designed for NDIS clients with neurodevelopmental or psychosocial disabilities to support them in the process of learning pre-driving skills, and obtaining their Learner's Permit, with the end goal of learning to drive independently.
The program includes a tailored learning program to support the client in learning pre-driving skills and content such as: road law and road craft, identification of hazards, safe decision making, planning and sequencing skills, building safe observation habits, and understanding the Learner's Permit test and conditions.
The OT will assist the client to build up gaps in their knowledge and skills, before supporting them to prepare and complete their Learner's Permit test.
NDIS Funding
This capacity building program is delivered by an Occupational Therapist and is funded through the ‘Improved Daily Living’ budget.

How is the program delivered?
The program runs for 6-10 sessions, depending on the client’s learning style and ability to understand the information provided.
The overall content of the program is mostly pre-determined; however, the delivery of the information can easily be tailored to the client’s specific needs, i.e. each session can be shorter in length, or more/less frequent as required.
The sessions are ideally held at one of our clinics (Frankston, Carrum Downs or Brighton), however, if required, they can be home-based (with additional travel costs).
Once the client has obtained their Learner's Permit, if suitable, the client may then be referred to our Learner Driver Program. Information about the Active One Learner Driver Program can be found here (insert link to LDP section).
